Kenneth Clarke
President



Kenneth graduated from Liverpool in 1978 and worked in mixed practice until joining the State Veterinary Service in Newcastle in 1991. He became a Veterinary Adviser with the Food Standards Agency in 2000 and held a number of roles in the development and implementation of veterinary public health policies in the UK and EU until leaving the FSA in 2010.
He now works as an independent consultant on veterinary public health and food safety, with a special interest in developing linkages between primary producers, veterinary practitioners and food processors as part of the whole chain approach to food safety.

Kenneth is an independent member of the BVA Veterinary Policy Group and Chair of its Production Animal Group, and was previously Conference Secretary of VPHA and an External Examiner at Liverpool Vet School.



John Lawrence
Junior Vice President



John graduated from Massey University, New Zealand, in 1981.
He worked in a variety of mixed, large animal and equine practices both in New Zealand and the UK before joining the then SVS in 1988.
John started his own Meat Hygiene Practice in 1992, which grew and eventually merged with Grants Veterinary Services in 2007 where he is now the Veterinary Technical Director.
John has a Certificate in Veterinary Public Health, and has been a Council member since 2003.



Collin Willson

Collin Willson: Business Manager in the Meat Hygiene Service

Collin Willson trained and qualified from the Royal Veterinary College London from 1968 to 1973. In 1973 he commenced employment in a veterinary practice in Abergavenny and in 1976 became a partner in the practice, later called Abbey Veterinary Centre, subsequently becoming managing partner.

Collin started meat hygiene work in 1978, in the 1980s the practice provided meat hygiene services to 3 local authorities covering red and white meat slaughterhouses, cutting plants and cold stores. The practice was successful in securing some of the first MHS contracts and built up to a 14 man practice with 5 official veterinarians supervised by Collin.

A desire to build on his public health and meat hygiene expertise, and other personal reasons, led Collin to leave the practice at the end of 2003.

From January 2004 until July 2005 Collin worked for the State Veterinary Service as a casual Veterinary Officer. In July 2005, he successfully applied for a post as Regional Veterinary Advisor in the Wales Region of the MHS.

In late 2007 he was seconded to the FSA in Wales as a veterinary meat hygiene advisor and in April 2008 was appointed as one of 12 MHS Business Managers for Great Britain. Collin’s area covers mid and south Wales and border counties (cluster group 9).

Collin has been a Council member of the Veterinary Public Health Association since 2001 and currently holds the position of Honorary Secretary.



Milorad Radakovic
Conference Secretary



Milorad graduated in 1989 from Zagreb University, Croatia. In the UK he gained full membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) by examination, and is also a holder of the Veterinary Public Health (Meat Hygiene) Certificate.
His work experience includes small and large animal practices. In the UK he has spent most of his veterinary career working in the sector of veterinary public health from practical on- line meat hygiene inspection, to performing the duties of an Official Veterinary Surgeon (OVS) and Principal Official Veterinary Surgeon (POVS) for the then Meat Hygiene Service (MHS), now part of the Food Standards Agency.
Currently he works as Veterinary Adviser for the Food Standards Agency in London. His main duties include the provision of veterinary technical advice to policy makers, and liaison with other government departments and academic institutions both nationally and internationally. During his career he has been involved in many veterinary projects, related to veterinary public health and has had several high-profile court appearances as a veterinary witness. He has also been involved in teaching on OVS courses, and is a visiting lecturer at Cambridge Veterinary School.



John Hood

John Hood


John qualified from University College Dublin in 1973. He worked in mixed practice in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) in his first postgraduate year. He then joined the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland as a TB testing officer for four years. In 1978 he commenced his own mixed practice in Northern Ireland and in the ROI. While in practice he also worked on VPHU duties as a Veterinary Inspector in an ROI abattoir slaughtering cattle and sheep, carrying out ante and post mortem duties. He remained in practice until December 1999.

He then joined the Department of Agriculture for NI as a veterinary officer, working in a number of divisional offices. Since January 2005 he has been in the Veterinary Public Health Unit acting as locum OV in several plants and since June 2006 he has been resident OV in a large cattle, sheep and pig processing plant.
His interests are sports in general but in particular, gaelic football, rugby and soccer. He enjoys country walks with his two schnoodles and picks wild berries from which he brews his own wine



Lewis Grant
Animal Welfare Representative



Lewis Grant qualified as BVM & S MRCVS in Edinburgh Royal (Dick) Vet School July 1968. Worked in general Practice in Lockerbie from July 1968 to January 1972. Became Principal of mixed practice in Masham North Yorkshire from February 1972 to 2003, 8 man mixed practice. Qualified as an OVS in July 1988. He worked as a contract OVS for a local authority from 1988, then the MHS from 1995. Joined MHS Northern region as POVS in 1998. Moved to HQ as HQ POVS in 2001. From 2003 acted as HQ veterinary adviser, subsequently as Veterinary and Technical Manager, managing a team, agreeing policies with SLA customers such as FSA and Defra, converting these into operational instructions, and providing staff training. Also acted as an expert at several TAIEX conferences on such subjects as BSE, TSEs of ABP, and Risk Management. For TAIEX contributed to an ABP strategy for Romania during their pre- accession status. Responsible for all FVO Missions to the UK involving the MHS & FSA, as well as hosting visits from Third Country delegations and negotiating conditions for the export of fresh meat and associated products to Third Countries. Also responsible for MHS/FSA Animal Welfare, Animal By-Products, and Animal ID issues. Following MHS amalgamation with the FSA, he became a Veterinary Manager. Retired from the FSA in 2010 and is currently performing consultancy work in the UK and Europe on public health matters, as well as language and communication issues for veterinarians whose first language is not English. Was awarded the MBE in January 2011 for services to the Food Standards Agency.



Jason Aldiss

A veterinarian who has specialised in the delivery of Official Controls for nearly 20 years. Jason has worked on various consultancy projects and delivered numerous services across Europe in the veterinary public health field for many years and is well recognised for his work in this broad specialist field. He is the recent past President of the Veterinary Public Health Association, is on the Board of the British Veterinary Association, is a Council Member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, is Secretary General of the Union of European Veterinary Hygienist and Managing Director of Eville & Jones Ltd.




Sandy Duncan
Honorary Treasurer



Sandy graduated from the Dick Vet School in 1987 and was designated an OV in 1990. He is currently Technical Director of Hall Mark Meat Hygiene Ltd. Sandy also farms a mixed unit in Angus specialising in organic beef and lamb. Previously he spent 12 years as a partner in a practice focusing on public health and farm animal work. His particular interest lies in the development of efficient and practical farm to fork production systems.



Lindsay Henderson
BVA REPRESENTATIVE



Lindsey was educated in Oxford, and graduated from Cambridge University Veterinary School in 1970. He rowed twice for Cambridge in the Boat Race. He worked in a mixed practice in Cheshire and Dorset (mainly large animals), before becoming a partner (then Principal) of a large mixed practice in Dorset. He has much experience of clinical BSE in the field. After achieving OVS designation in 1980, he worked mainly in a red meat slaughterhouse, cutting premises, and meat preparations plant, on contract to a local authority. Since 1995 he has worked as a contract OVS/ OV in red and white meat slaughterhouses, cutting premises, and meat preparations and meat products plants.



FRANCES MORENO
PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER



Frances graduated from Madrid University in 2000.
Qualified as OVS in May 2001.
Worked for 2 private practices as OVS contracted to MHS from 2001 to 2005
Joined Meat Hygiene Service in 2005 ,approved and audited abattoirs in the South of England wanting to slaughter over thirty month cattle at the same time as training MHS staff in said abattoirs.
Joined Animal Health in December 2008 and now currently working at a Veterinary Officer for Animal Health-VLA.



Eleni Michalopoulo
Council Member



Eleni graduated from Thessaloniki (Greece) and initially worked in farm animal practice and for the Greek State Veterinary Service. She has a PhD on infectious diseases from the Royal Veterinary College and an MSc on Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She worked as an OVS in food hygiene and inspection and as a VO for the State Veterinary Service in the UK until she joined the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Liverpool University as a Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health.
